As of August 27, 2008 at 3:30pm, Carina Amelia Rechkemmer is officially two years old!  She has been rehearsing being two for the past few weeks, so we are all excited to get the real show on the road.  We’ve determined that the genre of the show will be drama, for sure.

Carina’s second birthday party was on her actual birthday at our new home in Little Rock.  It was just the four of us, and we had a great day.

Planning and preparation started a whole 12 hours prior to the big day when we went shopping for gifts.  I had been campaigning for a play kitchen because Carina loves them so much, but we were finding them to be a little cost prohibitive.  We found one at Wal-Mart and were pleased with it’s “value” pricing, so we bought it and brought it home.  We decided to get it out of the box and set it up that night after Carina went to bed, and it’s a good thing, because it took us two and a half hours to assemble.  Then we realized that we did not have tape to wrap it with, so Craig suggested using the remaining “scrap” from the sheet of stickers that came with the kitchen.  In case you didn’t know, Craig is the King of the Rigger-Uppers.  So we covered the thing with left over packing paper and left it in the middle of the living room floor.

The next morning Carina ran right past the hulking, paper-covered mountain in the middle of our living room floor at least three times without even noticing it.  I finally pointed to it, and said, “hey Carina, what’s this?”, which initiated the removal of the paper.  She was pretty pleased, as the video below shows.

After Carina played in her new kitchen for a while, we got dressed and headed out to The Wonder Place to play.  We played for nearly three hours (Carina could have stayed longer!) and then went next door to Daddy’s Deli for lunch.  After lunch we headed home for nap time.  I worked on Carina’s cake while the kids slept.  I think I bit off a little more than I could chew, because the cake took me three hours to bake and decorate, in between wrapping presents and managing Callen.

In the evening we had dinner and cake and ice cream, and then opened gifts from Ba-chan, Uncle Shawn Aunt Becky and Sarah, and Miss Emily.  It was a long process to open all those gifts Carina style, but we got it done, and it was very exciting.  Thanks to everyone for such great gifts.

Finally, at the end of the day, Carina had a little surprise for us.  She actually asked to sleep in her toddler bed.  She did really well until about 10:45, when she woke up for some reason.  After about an hour of her getting out of her bed every 15 minutes, she went back to the crib.  Oh well.  At least there was some progress!

*editing note: Since her birthday Carina nearly made it through the night in her toddler bed – she slept from 8pm to 5:30am without any problems on 9/1, so we’re getting there.
